Budgeting 101 - Take Your First Step to Becoming Debt Free
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

If you are struggling with debt problems, it may be a result of not having any idea of where or how you have spent your money. This is a common problem among those people that struggle with debt, but it is not a situation that can't be fixed. Regardless of whether you are very wealthy or deep in debt, a budget can help you take control of your finances and allow you to live a debt free life.

To begin, you need to understand where your money goes each month. You can do this by starting to write down every nickel you spend for an entire month. Even if you are just buying a bag of chips at the local gas station, you need to keep track of these expenses. If you don't like writing everything down, there are also computer programs such as Quicken that can help you track all of your expenses.

In addition to tracking those random purchases, you also need to get a handle on what you spend on your monthly bills. These items are going to include your regular monthly expenses such as your rent or mortgage, your car payment, your insurance, credit cards and utility bills. But also be sure to include other things you spend money on each month like going out to dinner, eating lunch, and gas for your vehicle.

After you know how much you are spending every month, then simply subtract that amount from your monthly take-home income. If you discover that you are making less than you are spending each month, then you have a serious problem. You are going to have to change some of your spending habits or possibly even get a second job. Worse case, you may have to try and negotiate lower payments with your creditors or file for bankruptcy.

Hopefully, you will be able to make the changes necessary in order to stick to a workable budget. It may be difficult at first, but you discover that there is a huge satisfaction in watching your debt shrink to nothing while your savings continue to grow.
