Breast Augmentation Incision Types

If you have made the decision to obtain breast augmentation, you have another choice to make. You need to select your desired incision type. There are a few main selections to choose from, but making an informed decision is crucial so you should educate yourself about each kind available.

With the inframammary incision, the scar is hidden under the breasts, making the area appear completely natural. Since no tissue is cut during the surgery, you could still breastfeed after the operation. The downside is that the scar, while hidden, will likely be red for about a year.

Additionally, the location of the incision makes it likely that your bra will irritate the area as it heals. However, if you want as natural a look as possible with the ability to breastfeed, you should consider the inframammary method.

The transaxillary incision is located in the creases of the armpit, which allows the scar to stay hidden under the arm. However, this type has a higher chance of resulting in uneven breasts, and only saline implants can be inserted. In addition, any future surgery would require another opening besides this one. If you do not want a chance of your clothing bothering your implant opening as it heals, this type could be the way to go.

The peri-areolar type of breast augmentation involves a cut around the nipple through which the implants are inserted. The scar will eventually fade to match the color of areola, and the surgeon has more control with this kind of surgery. However, breastfeeding is often difficult, and there is also a risk of loss of nipple sensation.

The umbilicus incision is just as it sounds, as it is created in the belly button so there is no scar. Like the transaxillary kind, this method can only be performed with saline, since the implants are folded and inserted. They are then filled up once in place. Similarly, breasts have a higher chance of being uneven, and any future corrections would require another opening.

Your surgeon should go over the different kinds of incisions available at your consultation. Some surgeons prefer one over another, or only perform certain methods. However, ultimately you decide what methods you will use in your breast augmentation. If a particular doctor does not perform the method you prefer,

you can always find another surgeon, especially if you have specific reasons for selecting one over the others.
