For many people the beginning of the day is fast-paced rush to get ready and out the door to work on time. There are a lot of people who don't slow their mornings down and make time for breakfast, and if this describes you, you may be interested to know that you're losing out on a few serious health benefits. Long held as a healthy meal, breakfast is showing in modern studies to be more important than ever, and the effect it has on the human body is rapidly gaining more and more attention in the scientific community. Simply by giving your body a good meal before your workday you can receive these benefits, and best of all, it is totally free and has no catch.
While it's true that most people avoid breakfast because of time restraints, there are also an overwhelming number of people who miss out on it because of their weight. There are a lot of people who think that if they eat breakfast regularly, they'll get heavier. It sort of makes sense - those are just extra calories, aren't they? If you skip them, that will help you lose weight. Unfortunately, that is completely wrong. While breakfast does add calories to your daily diet, it also does much more than that. When you skip breakfast, your body reacts by slowing down its metabolism by a severe rate. It doesn't have the fuel to burn, so to make sure it has enough for the day it has to slow down the rate at which it burns energy. The result is a drop in energy, an increase in hunger, and a drop in blood sugar. Naturally, your body is then going to try to compensate. It does so by causing you to be more hungry than normal for the day, and in order to balance out its blood sugars, it craves fattening, sweet, unhealthy foods. You'll be much more likely to snack throughout the day, eat more during meals, and your body won't be able to process those meals because of its lowered metabolism. Simply eat a small meal in the morning, however, and your metabolism will be up, you'll be less likely to snack excessively, and your body will process food faster.
What should you be eating for breakfast? Well, to get the greatest benefits, scientists strongly recommend cereal. Not sugary kid's cereals of course, but cereals high in fiber and made from whole grains. These are perfect to start your day on, because the fiber content helps to provide you with more energy throughout the entire day. More importantly, however, research has shown that consuming whole grain products like these cereals regularly drastically lowers your chances of dying from a cardiovascular disease. How much less likely? 20% in many studies, and that's more than enough to get your attention. These cereals will be protecting you from one of the leading killers of Americans, all while giving you boosted energy. Now, as a side note, energy bars have become increasingly popular in recent years. They seem perfect, as they are fast, portable, and contain a few good vitamins. Unfortunately, breakfast bars rarely contain very much fiber, aren't usually made from whole grains, and literally contain as many calories as some candy bars.
Breakfast has long been touted as an important meal for the healthy development of children, and thanks to extensive research it is also proving to be invaluable for adults of any age. There really is no reason to skip out on food in the morning - it'll help you lose unwanted pounds, improve the condition of your heart, and get you fired up naturally for the day ahead of you. It's also cheap and easy, and many nutritional breakfasts can be made in a snap. If your morning routine doesn't allow time to stop and eat something, science is suggesting that you either slow down or explore creative ways to get your body the fuel it needs.
