In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, how many times do we misplace things? You wind up spending what seems like an eternity looking for an item you just can't find and eventually give up...and you never find it!
I think the worst for me is the loss of money. We have all done this at one time or another; yet we scold our children for losing things or misplacing them. Most of the time it turns out to be something we purchased for them. Well, not always...please read on!
Over the last 9 months or so things in our house have been disappearing. Most of the items belonged to my son and myself. My experience was with money and an expensive ring. I would check all over, check with my husband and my kids and even go through the garbage more times than i can count. I always came up empty and eventually gave up. So along with my belongings, i was convinced I was losing my mind as well.
Was it due to my age? Was I having a "senior moment"? I am NOT at that stage yet!
As silly as this may sound, I was relieved when it started happening to my teenage son,too.So at least I wasn't losing my mind. Now my son's things were beginning to disappear as well. These were items that I remembered seeing in his room recently. Now having a son you need to look everywhere. My child is not the neatest nor is he the most organized. You need to look beyond the mess and also below the mess.
After numerous occasions of these occurrences we were all beginning to become concerned. Cash was missing, a memory card, a spare cell phone, and some small pieces of jewelry. We finally started to put the pieces together in our heads and came up with a solution.
We purchased a Boom Box Hidden Camera System; which is a functional boom box with a built in spy cam and DVR. We set it up and let it do it's job. The results were upsetting. My sons friend was caught on cam stealing from us. He would take small items, one at a time...He would wait for my son to leave the room to get them drinks or snacks, and then he would pocket whatever caught his eye.
Who knows how much more of our items he would have taken if we didn't set our surveillance trap? He was a close friend and was over at our house all the time. Needless to say he doesn't come to visit anymore.
We recovered most of our belongings and his parents made good on the remainder. We in turn agreed to leave his punishment to his parents. I believe he is grounded for the rest of his life...only kidding.
Hopefully he has learned his lesson. We learned a valuable lesson as well...You can never be too careful.
