Chances are you have heard of Seth Godin. He has published a number of great business and marketing books, writes an excellent blog, and may be (or at least will be) considered one of the great marketing geniuses of our time. Linchpin is his latest book and differs to some degree than his previous publications. You could argue that this book exudes a more motivational tone than his others.
Seth describes a Linchpin as a person within an organization that is indispensable, irreplaceable, unique, and invaluable. In the changing, ultra-competitive business world that we occupy, to not become a linchpin is the same as condemning yourself to corporate slavery and an unfulfilled, regretful life.
Just a few key points of the book:
Everyone is an artist - When Seth speaks of art he not referring to traditional forms (painting, singing, writing), he considers art to be anything that creates true value and gives a "gift".
To be an artist you must submit "emotional work" - Work that you pour your soul into rather than just "busy" work. Everyone is capable of doing this whether you are a business manager, coffee barista, or custodian (or write a blog).
You must suppress the "Lizard Brain" - The part of the brain that creates the resistance. The resistance as Seth puts it "the voice in the back of our head telling us to back off, be careful, go slow, compromise. " Everyone must quiet our inner "lizard brain".
"Real artists' ship!" - This is a quote from Steve Jobs that Godin uses to emphasize that you must not delay your creations. In other words if you are an entrepreneur with a great idea, go for it! Immerse yourself into the creative process, you do have the ability.
Above are just some of the insights to what it takes to become a true Linchpin.
Some have pointed out that those who are motivated enough to read a book like Linchpin do not necessarily need any further motivation to succeed. The fact that they purposely sought out a book about how to become indispensable means they already have what it takes to become a Linchpin. This is an interesting point. However, for some this may be just the extra "push" needed to start a business venture, create a new product (gift), and truly become an artist. Linchpin is highly recommended to any wannabe entrepreneur.
