"Eat, Pray, Love" is a novel by the novelist and journalist, Elizabeth Gilbert that tells about the author's journey for spiritual seeking. In this novel, the author tells an honest story of her emotional and psychological breakdown after a divorce, a crushing depression, and another failed love. Even, she says that she was at risk for suicide more than once.
To recover from all those above, Gilbert takes a radical step by traveling around the world all alone. In her journey, she takes the culinary expedition to Italy for the sake of pleasure (eat), a spiritual retreat at a temple in India (pray), and a search for balance with the help of an elderly medicine man on a tourist island in Indonesia, Bali (love). By this novel, she shares how she progresses from depression to a balanced, full life.
This novel is like a travelogue, detailing experiences in varying cultures. But, what differences Eat, Pray, Love from most travelogues in common is the intensity with which you as a reader become engrossed in Gilbert's emotional journey.
What makes this novel great is her free prose. Gilbert can bring you inside every step of her thoughts. While it has its funny moments, such as in stories of banana juice, Eat, Pray, Love still manages to cover the deep subject at hand - her road to recovery - by highlighting her dark moments, particularly in Italy, where she feels no one would love or support her, but herself. "Eat, Pray, Love" is captivating, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and hilarious. Moreover, Gilbert's style is casual in tone that makes this novel be comfortable and fun to read. So, do not miss this book!
