Hate to break it to you, but the Jay Cutlers and Ronnie Colemans of the world do cardio. Bodybuilders are bigger and harder today than ever. Today, to even get looked at you must be huge and shredded - quite the tough combination.
OK, so I am asked every single day, is cardio good or how much is necessary for bodybuilders, whose goal is build, shape, and pack on muscle mass?
Well, if building muscle were the single goal of a bodybuilder, the perfect amount of cardio would be zero because the more cardio you do, the more the body has to use muscle as an energy reserve. Because once fat starts to get depleted and glycogen stores low, the body resorts to burning up your muscles. So the problem is that bodybuilding does not only concern itself with shear muscle mass, but also (and perhaps even to a greater extent then ever) cares how lean, cut and shredded you are.
Very few people can simply lower their caloric intake through dieting and get ripped without doing any type of cardiovascular exercise, especially without losing tons of muscle in the process.
Nearly everyone has to jump on a tread mill, a bike, or in the pool to get a cut and ripped physique. In addition, (and a funny after thought) but cardio is the best way to strengthen another muscle, called cardiac muscle, which just so happens makes up the heart, which is obviously the most important muscle in the human body (the muscle that allows you to supply all your muscles with oxygen and the nutrients muscles need to get huge).
