Hemorrhoids are already enough of a pain and a nuisance if they are benign. However, what occurs when there are bleeding hemorrhoids? And why does the bleeding occur in the first place? Usually bleeding occurs when there are extremely weak vein walls. This combines with the excessive pressure that causes hemorrhoids to result in the bleeding of hemorrhoids. The bleeding is usually not serious, although it is an inconvenience. Many of the standard methods of curing and preventing hemorrhoids, however, are not as suitable when there is rectal and anal bleeding.

One cause of bleeding hemorrhoids is that the polyps and cysts simply fall off due to increased friction in the rectal area. When the cyst falls off and detaches, the blood behind the rectal tissue flows out of the rectum. This is usually accompanied by severe pain and swelling. One method of stopping the bleeding is to take stool softeners. When stools are too hard and rigid, they chafe the existing hemorrhoids and cause the cysts to detach and bleed. When the stools are soft, however, they flow out much more smoothly and painlessly.

If the bleeding continues, however, medical action should be taken. Usually, hemorrhoids left untreated for over a month are indicative of something more serious than the chafing and bleeding that occurs fairly regularly in benign cysts. In more severe cases, bleeding can even be indicative of colon or rectal cancer that is far more serious than the regular chafing. Prescriptions usually do not fix the problem of hemorrhoids that bleed; however, doctors can get to the root cause of the hemorrhoids much more effectively than the average layperson can, and he can treat them more effectively. This process will prevent more hemorrhoids from developing.

Bleeding in this part of the body can be incredibly embarrassing. If they persist on a regular basis, then adult pads may be worn to prevent embarrassing situations. This is entirely acceptable and natural, and until the hemorrhoids are cured and have healed, is expected. It's important to keep in mind that this condition is extremely common, and even the bleeding is more common than one might imagine. It is not the bubonic plague or leprosy. It is a medical condition with which many suffer silently. When treated effectively, they do not have to be a persistent problem - or even a problem in the first place.
