Best Violin Accessories For Beginners

Expert Author Eric Conklin

So you recently have been playing the violin and developing on the instrument in your own time, but need to get a few accessories into your arsenal to help produce better results in the practice room? There are quite a few simple things you can add to your instrument to make it sound a lot better simply by improving your ability to practice and to play. These accessories may seem extraneous, but they matter a lot to a serious violinist, or even just one who wants to get great results from quality time spent in the practice room.

Most important of all, get yourself a metronome. The metronome is extremely important and needs not to be underestimated by any means. This simple device will help you define your beats more powerfully and more naturally by ingraining it into your playing style. After hearing it a number of times alongside whatever piece you happen to be playing, your mind will naturally catch up to it, no matter what you were trying to originally learn.

The next best thing you can get yourself is a tuner. Ever try to tune a violin without a piano or a well tuned string to adjust yourself to? It is difficult and usually results in losing the pitch slightly due to the loss of memory of the note since most people don't have perfect pitch. With a tuner, you can listen to an open A or even fine tune every single note you have on the instrument with a dial that shows you how close you are to playing the appropriate note. This is not only easier than using a piano, it is more versatile and allows you to tune different strings without needing to use relative pitch.

And don't forget rosin! I recommend getting dark, cloth wrapped rosin to improve the quality of your bow stroke and allow yourself to get better sound on the instrument. The bottom line with rosin is that a single piece of rosin will likely last a few years. Do you really want to spend a few years with the cheap stuff? It doesn't make sense and the best thing you can do is spend a few more dollars on a quality piece of dark cloth wrapped rosin to get the most out of each and every bow stroke.

Regardless of how great any of these accessories are, you definitely need to get a good teacher first and foremost. Not having a good teacher will keep you behind on anything you use these accessories for, so don't forget to find yourself one and a good practice method to keep up with!
