Chicken coops are often built by people who run a poultry farm. A chicken coop is made in order to store all the chickens at one place. Such structures often have perches for the birds to sleep and individual nest boxes where the birds can lay their eggs. These buildings have outdoor run attached to them and the exterior and the interior is wholly covered with straw or wood chips. Such materials are used because they make cleaning the coop much easier.
Here I would tell you about some essential features that must be kept in mind while you are designing and planning a Chicken coop.
1. Location
A good location is very important for a chicken coop. While planning and building the structure you must make sure that the particular area you have chosen should neither be exposed to tough weather nor should it be prone to flooding. A clean, dry and well shaded area should be selected so that it keeps the birds safe in all the conditions.
2. Select a portable coop
Sometimes it becomes highly essential to save your birds from dangerous animals and rough weather conditions that is why a mobile coop is much better as compared to a fixed one. This set up would make it easier for you to move the chicken building as a when desired.
3. It should be easily cleaned
A good coop should be the one that is cost effective and easy to make. When you are designing the structure, make sure you design it in such a way that it becomes easier for you to clean it on a daily basis. The floor should be downward sloping for proper drainage and the doors should open inwards.
4. Good construction materials
You can make a coop using cheap scarp materials, but such a structure would not last for a long period of time. That is why you must always use proper sturdy materials like timber to build it. For windows and doors you can easily use thick wire mesh.
5. Proper ventilation
Every chicken coop should be properly ventilated. You should include two to three windows in your design which can easily slide and open. The doors should be large so that you can enter inside for cleaning purpose.
6. Good lightening system
Light your building with either fluorescent bulbs or electric lights. The lightening system would make sure the coop is not dark and it would also keep the birds warm during the cold seasons.
7. It should be spacious
Keep the chicken coop spacious so that you can enter it for cleaning purposes. You can also keep nesting boxes where the birds can lay eggs, bedding boxes for their droppings and roosts for sleeping.
A well built and designed chicken coop would always keep the birds happy and the environment clean. So, follow the above stated tips to build a sturdy, well lit and ventilated coop.
