Expert Author Joseph Clayton

The Vixia series has been able to penetrate the camcorder market because of its performance and price. It is the same series that have garnered multiple awards because of its excellent imaging capability. The series just welcomed it newest camcorder, the Canon Vixia HF200HD. Let us see if it is able to live up to its expectations.

The device can take still shots using the 3.89 megapixel camera. Even though the effective resolution is just around 3.31 MP, it is able to deliver crisp pictures that are good enough for the average user. Most would say that 3.31 megapixels is not enough to make great looking picture. One must remember that this is a camcorder, not a digital camera. It is specially designed for video, taking still shots is just an added bonus.

This compact camcorder can capture videos in 1080p. There is nothing more beautiful than getting the highest resolution for High Definition. Most camcorders use a 720p resolution, which will result in some pixilation when you are watching it in a big screen. The 1080p makes sure that you capture every moment of that special occasion. Pixilation is never going to be an issue with this Vixia model.

Optical zoom can reach up to 15x, but if you need more magnification, you can always use the 300x digital zoom. A feature that makes this camcorder better than its counterparts is its image stabilizer. It can handle anything from a shaky hand to a movie vehicle. On top of that, the image stabilizer works photos and videos.

The Canon Vixia HF200HD uses a MPEG-IV and AVCHD codec for its video. There is no need to convert them into another format. Just copy them from the SD card, and write them into any media you want. You can even plug in the camcorder directly to the TV. Just make sure you have a NTSC compatible television. The shutter speed is pretty much the same with other camcorders.

The DIGIC DVIII installed as the device's image processor makes this device an attractive upgrade for Vixia owners. It uses the same interface as its older predecessor. If you had the HF100 or any other Vixia camcorder, you will feel right at home. In addition, the powerful DIGIC processor makes sure that you will be able to capture excellent video all the time.

White balance has six different presets that make shooting photos and video relatively easy. The camcorder has an internal flash that helps compensate the lacking light. However, it is not as powerful as the ones that you can see in dedicated digital cameras. The Face Detection and Auto Focus make this camcorder very user friendly. You can just set everything to automatic, and the device will make the necessary corrections for you.

For around $500, you can get a quality camcorder that delivers true High Definition recording. There are other camcorders in the market that can cost less than the Canon Vixia HF200HD, but they lack features that this device offers. This model may cost a little more, but its quality videos makes up for its price. In addition, this model does not use expensive media like a Solid State Drive or DVD disk. You can easily get an SD card for $14 to $25.
