#1 - This first beginner's golf tip will keep you from embarrassment on the course. First, recall some geometry you learned in high school. If you can recall that a line is the straightest distance between two points, you will be in good shape. A big reason why good golfers do not like playing with inexperienced golfers is that they tend to step on putting lines. The putting line is the path that a ball most likely will travel on its way to the hole. It's very important to remember to walk to your ball and putt without stepping on another's line. Why? It's important because your footprint may cause a depression in the green possibly deflecting a ball from rolling into the cup.
#2 - This next beginner's golf tip will prevent you from violating the rules. Do you know how close to the line you should stand and observe the line of a putt to be legal? This is more of a question of sportsmanship. You should be out of the peripheral vision of the player that is ready to putt. But, if you are partners with another or are playing a scramble, this does not apply. When you observe pro tours, you might notice a caddie line up directly behind a player until just before the club starts back. This is also a different situation. If you find that you and another player have almost identical putts, just stand aside. Just as soon as the other golfer strokes the ball, go ahead and move into position to observe the putt. This should only happen after his ball is rolling. Until then, please stay out of his peripheral vision.
#3 - Make sure you come to a complete stop while another golfer is playing their shot. What tends to be annoying to players is when a golfer does not stop and wait while another golfer is taking his shot. Please be courteous: stand absolutely still while someone is playing their shot. Then go.
