Before even thinking about becoming a valuable employee at a company it is important for you to decide whether or not you will feel comfortable working at this job and if your efforts will be financially compensated according to your accomplishments in the future. No one can become a valuable leader working at a place or performing tasks they do not enjoy.

Let's take a look at some of the basic steps that you must follow in order to become a valuable employee and leader:

-- Identifiy The Most Important Tasks or Set Priorities

Tasks that you deem to be important we not be that relevant to your superiors, when it comes to business everyone has a different approach about how things should be done in order to reach a goal, assuming that a task has a higher priority than others is a very common mistake that new employees make when they first start working at a company.

The best way to avoid confrontations with your superiors and being told what to do is to ask as many questions as possible during your orientation, if an orientation is not provided then you need to determine what is it that your manager deems more important, whether it is sales, keeping records, taking care of the clientele or any other task, you need to be a top of your game.

-- Pay Attention and Learn from What You're Told

It is very common to encounter people who don't know how to listen, they can definitely hear but they are bad listeners. If you are able to retain and understand in your mind what you're being told and instructed to do your will be able to learn a lot more than most people can. Analyzing the concepts that are being said is also crucial and adds to your overall experience. Make sure to reserve all of your questions until the end of the conversation, this way the person giving you advice or instructions will not deviate from important points.

Most people who are asked questions will be happy to become your free tutor because the fact that you're asking them for help makes them feel special because they are in a position where their knowledge is crucial for your advancement.

Once you are in a leveled playing field make sure to keep learning as much as possible because the way business is conducted constantly changes in direct relations to laws and technology.
