There are thousands of professions worldwide. But one that has become popular in the last twenty years, is the "carpet technician". Most homeowners love a clean house. Mom's especially, demand a clean carpet, to keep the house smelling and looking good. Over the last thirty years the chemistry of carpet cleaning has changed for the better. Carpet machines have continued to develop as well. The water is hotter, the suction better, and the chemistry has evolved to the point that a carpet can look brand new again. All that is needed is the right equipment, the right attitude, and the right approach to keeping your clientele happy.
Step One to becoming a carpet cleaner is certification. Most major carpet cleaning outlets provide classes almost every month. The training includes everything a technician needs to know. You are taught about different chemicals and the different types of carpets to use them on. Chemicals have a varying range of PH's values, and must be used carefully on the different kinds of carpet. Some stains are stubborn, and require spotting from chemical. There are playbooks available to show you which spotter to use for which stain. At times a combination of spotters must be used. In the end most any spot will come out. By using the right pre-spray, and agitating the carpet with a rake, the carpet can be cleaned to a brand new state. After training the best way to learn is on the job.
Step two. Most people get into carpet cleaning to provide for their family. If done correctly one can make over $100,000 gross per year. But to get that level much effort must be spent. It is hard to start from scratch and build a business. A good carpet machine with all the equipment, and van can cost about $60,000. This means you must make about $1500 dollars a month just to make the payment on the machine. The chemicals usually cost about ten percent of the job.
Gasoline for the machine and truck cost about fifteen percent. It is wise to put aside thirty percent for the payment and maintenance on the machine. In the end you are not left with much. So you must market your product wisely to get your clientele base started. Usually this means charging much less, to get into the home. Once your customer trusts you, and you give them a great product at a great price, they will continue to come back. But this can make for a rough first year. If a carpet cleaning business is going to fail it usually fails in the first two years.
Step three. Make a motto for your business. Stick to this motto. While in a home do the very best to get every spot out, and to dry the carpets as quickly as possible. The client knows where all the trouble spots are. They are also the one who has to walk on the carpet until it dries. Thus by getting rid of the stubborn spots and drying the carpets quickly, you customer will love you. When finished with the job, make sure the customer is satisfied. Give them a guarantee. Give them your referral program. If they love you and your price they will spread the word. So give them an incentive to do so.
Step four. Marketing. There are many ways to market your product. Start by buying business cards, and flyers. It is wise to leave the customer with a magnet. Start a website, and try to get it to the top of the Google search. With a great product your business can grow quickly. Do not be afraid to talk, and show confidence in your product.
With some hard work, determination, and a bit of luck, you can succeed. Never give up. Use all of your resources. In the end you will be a happy, and content.
