Older people don't always just sit around and do nothing. My wife and I knew this very sweet lady when we lived in Florida. She was somewhere in her mid-seventies, a little shabby looking, and her teeth left something to be desired.
She was never what you might call a personal friend, but we used to see her around fairly frequently and always stopped for a chat. We hadn't seen her for a while, but when we did, we completely failed to recognize her.
She must have had an epiphany, or she'd met a man twenty years younger, or something like that.
She wore a brightly coloured blouse, one of those that ties at the midriff. A mini skirt, but what hit us between the eyes were her teeth. They were false, obviously, but they were the biggest teeth we'd ever seen in a human mouth. I think the local stone mason must have made them for her.
Bless her heart, when she smiled, you didn't know whether it was in greeting, or whether she was considering you for dinner!
The mini skirt wasn't the wisest choice of fashion. Apart from anything else, she had bandy legs. If only she'd placed herself in the care of a qualified beautician from the word 'go,' the overall appearance would have been a lot less startling.
Now yes, all right, Lois and I chuckled about it, but you had to give her 'A' for effort. We didn't see too much of her after that. What caused this sudden blossoming, we never did find out, but we've always applauded her effort.
After all, we're reminded every day by subtle signs that aging is an undesirable state of decline. But, you see, it needn't be. Be your own person and make your own choices. Don't allow others to make them for you. If you feel like doing something 'out of the box,' as it were, then do it. It's your life.
Another study the Harvard psychologist, Helen Langer, conducted, was to compare people who habitually wore uniforms as part of their work, against those who wore ordinary clothes. All those studied were in the same socio-economic group.
She found that those who wore uniforms had fewer days off work, fewer hospitalizations, fewer injuries, fewer doctors' visits and fewer chronic illnesses. All the ages were similar, within five years of each other.
The reason was that those in uniform weren't being constantly reminded of their age by the way in which they were expected to dress.
She then turned the spotlight on affluent people and found the situation even worse with them. As you might imagine, there was a lot more keeping up with others of the same income bracket. Wealthy people were able to buy more clothes, of course, and their choices were internalized as unhealthy expectations.
Mrs. 'X' dresses in this way, she's 75 like I am, so I'd better dress in the same sort of way. This is unhealthy. Be your own person and make your own choices
