A big problem that I hear from people using the internet to get exposure for their business is the response rate they are getting, or lack their of. One thing to remember is that creating a profile or fan page is not going to increase your business. Why? Because the point of sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. is to be social. Simple enough right? And this is the same whether you are online or offline. No matter the business or industry. People want to work with people they like, and it takes time to do that.
When you start to use Internet Marketing the first step is to take your desired end result out of the equation, which is gaining new customers or partners. You can't just add friends to your network update your status with links and advertisements and expect solid long term results. You need to get social, build relationships and get interactive. So stop thinking what can this person do for me, and start thinking what can I do for this person.
Are you active in groups you belong to, participating in discussions posted in the groups?
Are you commenting on posts made by other members in your Network?
Are you truly getting to know the people that join your Network and have a genuine interest in getting to know them?
By actually networking with the people around you, you will build relationships, meet other like minded people, and most importantly, you will have fun. I have meet some great people online that I normally would never have meet any other way except through Social Networking. So the next time you are online read other members posts, read their profiles, learn what they do, learn their likes and dislikes, get involved in discussions, offer valuable input, and don't worry about just pitching your company. Enjoy the new relationships you are building online with others and have fun doing it.
