As the clocks turn back, homes and gardens need that extra bit of attention to ensure they remain secure.
Home insurance provider Cornish Mutual finds that theft claims traditionally increase with the longer hours of darkness with most thieves preferring to operate during the night. Therefore, property owners are warned to take extra steps to ensure their valuables are kept safe and to keep thieves at bay.
How to reduce the chance of a burglary
When it comes to home burglaries, prevention is much better than cure. Indeed there are some simple steps you can take to limit the chances of a break-in.
Firstly, ensure that all valuables are kept out of sight. Many burglars like to 'check out' properties before they act by peering in through windows - so keep curtains closed and keep valuables where they are not easily spotted. Be careful what you do with your rubbish too, particularly with Christmas approaching. Thieves are on the lookout for boxes that previously contained expensive items - though they may be trash, it indicates to thieves that there are goods worth seeking inside, so don't leave boxes by the road until your refuse collection day.
Be wary too of criminals acting as bogus callers. Checking photo IDs alone can be a waste of time with a sophisticated operator, so instead call the company the caller claims to represent to verify their identity. If the person in question is legitimate, they won't mind waiting.
Security could cut premiums
Clearly boosting the security of your home is a great way to reduce the chance of a burglary - however, as an added bonus it could also help you save money on your insurance premiums too.
Most insurers offer discounts to homeowners that install burglar alarms, CCTV cameras, five-lever mortise deadlocks, window locks and time-switch lights. Consult your insurer before you buy any devices to find out which equipment will offer the largest savings.

Make sure you have good quality home insurance in place to pick up the pieces if a break-in does occur. You can find cheap home insurance that still offers top-notch cover, with several insurers even increasing their limits over the Christmas period to cover the added value in homes.
