Flying an electric RC plane can be thrilling for the pilot and also entertaining for those watching. It is one of the fastest growing of all hobbies, thanks to advances in battery, motor and radio technology which have made the sport more accessible and affordable than in the past. Here are a few basic, important things to remember to keep aircraft, pilot and spectators safe. Make sure to fly in an open field away from people. Once airborne, do not fly so high you will not be able to see it well. Also, do not fly too low as this will limit the time you have to correct any problems that may arise.
Next, get comfortable and become familiar with the controller and know when to trim or adjust control surfaces. When not turning, the goal is to fly straight and level. Watch the flight pattern for a few seconds and move the trims as needed, allowing the plane to fly on its own after each adjustment. Be careful not to over-correct. As in cars, many accidents are caused by an over-correction. Keep movements steady and stay relaxed. If you should find yourself in trouble, cutting the motor will decrease the speed momentarily, giving you a few extra seconds to regain control.
Landing your electric RC plane could be the most challenging part. Practice controlling the motor speed and trimming your rudder to allow for a smooth and level landing. If the speed or approach do not seem correct, add power to the plane to have it rise again, then come around and give the landing another try.
