If you're heading to a big sports event such as a baseball game, football, NASCAR racing or even concerts, you may want to party it up with the best of them. Tailgating is the art of partying around a truck, SUV or other vehicle where beverages are served and food is grilled up to people's liking. You'll typically find this going on at college and NFL games or NASCAR events, as you'll see campers, RV's and trucks scattered around the parking lots and inside the racetrack. Outdoor concerts have also been known to have plenty of partying outside. In this brief article, you can get some basic tips for making your tailgating experience run smoothly.

Food is the main centerpiece of successful tailgating, so you'll want to plan carefully what types of food you'll have at the event. Make sure you can make the selections up prior to the event, or they can be grilled there. To avoid food poisoning make sure you are keeping the cold stuff at a temperature of 40 degrees or lower. Hot food should be about 140 degrees or higher. A good portable grill may be a wise investment if you attend a lot of functions with tailgating. As for what to eat with, make sure you're prepared with disposable plates, bowls and eating utensils as well as cups. You may need some regular utensils such as large serving spoons and forks, but try to keep items you have to wash yourself to a minimum. If the particular arena or parking lot area allows alcoholic beverages, make sure to bring bottle openers and corkscrews. Bring something to put everything on, such as a large heavy table cloth, or a table so it's easy to enjoy the food and beverages.

Cleaning up after yourself is a lot easier if you've prepared with disposable items, and bring paper towels, napkins and wet wipes. Make sure to dispose of your trash so that you aren't causing a problem for the particular venue staff or the environment. Tailgating is meant to be fun, and if you make sure you're prepared ahead of the time with all the necessities, you're sure to be the hit of the outdoor festivities!
