Nowhere is shopping for something healthy, affordable, and good for the environment quite as hard as in the seafood aisle of one's local grocery store. With the current state of the oceans, it's a wonder that there is still so much fish left to eat at all. Lately, many of the world's fishing fleets are reporting some of the most dismal catches on record, with international waters depleted of schools of fish that once were so plentiful it was all fishermen could do to fit their ample catches on their boats.
However, while the rest of the seafood market in the world suffers more setback loses, wild Alaska seafood continues to thrive. Whether it's the only cod population in the world that's actually expanding, or a salmon population that, in the past 50 years, has managed to come back from serious trouble and replenish itself quickly and efficiently, those fish caught fresh in Alaska's cold and clear waters are the ones that consumers, both green-concious shoppers and gourmets, should be putting in their grocery baskets.
Wild Alaska seafood is an excellent choice for health reasons, too. Because the fish are allowed to fully mature before being caught, and because of the extensive rules in place for fishermen who work Alaska's lakes, rivers, and ocean, it means that all of the fish that are caught are of the proper size. Even more importantly, they are immediately frozen, meaning that consumers from far away are able to get meat that tastes fresher and more delicious than other frozen fish.
More importantly, in a world where the farmed fish industry turns out a sub-par product, and where fish farming is destroying other ecosystems, wild Alaska seafood doesn't hurt anything. It is good for its local environment, its populations are stable, and the people who make their living off of the fishing industry are doing okay, too. So the choice is easy the next time you're in the grocery store: go with the Alaskan.
