Bakewell - Derbyshire England Offers Some Great Architecture and Beautiful Hillsides

The town of Bakewell - Derbyshire is a small village of less than 4000 residents and is in the Derbyshire Dales District of Derbyshire County. Bakewell which has a desert named after it, Baekwell Pudding, got its name from Beadeca's well. The town of Bakewell is located within the boundaries of the Peak district National Park.
There are several historical structures close to the city of Bakewell. Among these is Haddon hall. Haddon Hall was built by William Peverel, the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror, in 1087. Although in the historical manner Haddon hall was never considered a castle it had a wall erected around it and was the home of the Vernon family and eventually the manners family through the means of marriage. The hall sat mostly vacant and unimproved from the late 1500's till the 1920's when it was meticulously restored.
Also in the area of Bakewell is the Chatsworth house. This large country manor is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and has belonged to the Devonshire and the Cavendish family since 1549. This home is surrounded by some grand gardens and the rolling hills of Derbyshire County. Chatsworth house has been selected as one of England's favorite country houses on numerous occasions.
Another historic structure in the area is the Bakewell parish church which was founded in 920 and still possesses a wooden cross dating back to the 10th century. The current structure was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and was eventually rebuilt in the 1840's. The town of Bakewell and the church are listed in the Domesday Book. This book is the survey of England written in 1085 by William I.
Among the events held annually in Bakewell is the Agricultural show which is considered the largest covered agricultural show in the UK. This event is visited each year by as many as 50, 000 people. Also popular is the Peak Literary festival which held twice a year. The spring holding of this festival is held the last week of May and the fall festival is held during the last week of October.
