Backyard Landscaping Tips

Expert Author Jack Labens

A backyard can be much more than a plot of land behind your house; with the right care, plants, and furniture, you can turn your backyard into a landscaping oasis that can be used all year around. Although landscaping can cost thousands of dollars to hire an architect and gardeners, you can do a lot of it yourself to save you some money. Garden ponds, rock gardens, fences, patio furniture, and arbors are just some things you can do to liven up your backyard space without spending a fortune on design and labor.

Shrubs with flowers and bushes can add a lot to any backyard. They are used frequently in landscaping because their berries attract birds and have beautiful foliage in the fall and look great even in the winter. Shrubs and bushes can be easily pruned into great designs and can even be used for privacy purposes. These plants look great in a backyard as they add color and are easy to maintain throughout the year. Spruce up your yard today with some beautiful shrubs and bushes!

Water structures such as fountains, garden ponds, and rock gardens are great additions to any backyard. It's a great way to pool water and to add accents throughout the yard. Although adding a pond might seem daunting, there are actually quite a few good do it yourself kits available at home goods stores. Fountains are also great for attracting birds into the yard, which is very pleasant in the spring.

Low growing plants such as vines, perennials, and herbs are easy for adding accents and color to your backyard. These can either be planted directly into the ground, in a pot, on a trestle or side of the house. These plants can be great for preventing erosion, enriching the soil, and covering ground in areas where there is cannot be grass.

Patio furniture can also be a great addition to your backyard which can help with style and enable it for entertaining and leisure. Wicker and teak patio furniture adds accents and allows the backyard to be used on a daily basis. Chaise lounge chairs are great for relaxing in the spring and summer, and tables are great for meals outside. A great way to get your money's worth is to cover your furniture when you're not using it. It helps the furniture stay looking new, even in the dead of winter. Because furniture is exposed to such harsh weather such as sun, rain, and ice, covering them can add 5-10 years to their life.

There are lots of things you can do to make your backyard worth entertaining and relaxing in. There are practical things you can do such as adding a vegetable garden or compost, or more aesthetic additions such as a fountain or flowers. Whatever you do, make sure you look into doing it yourself first to help you save money. Lots of stores such as Home Depot and Loews have people to help you out to specifically teach you how to do something yourself. Remember, little things can go a long way!
