Backlinks, SERP, Page Rank, and SEO Experts

Expert Author Edward Thorpe

Normal people don't give a second thought to search engine optimization, search engine result pages, page rank, backlinks and SEO experts.

But, we 'ain't normal people. We're Internet Marketers! We tremble and shiver with excitement when we're around SERP, Backlinks, PR and SEO Experts. They hold the answer to all our dreams. We take this stuff out to dinner and entice them to drink to excess. We want them all hot to trot, and receptive, when we ask them for the good stuff...

THEY have what we need: TRAFFIC!

Most Internet marketers understand that traffic either comes from advertising or from search engines. We're willing to buy traffic if the occasion demands it. But we'd much rather get free traffic from a search engine, wouldn't we? To get the search engine traffic, we expect to tilt the search engine's rankings our way by implementing a set of traffic-getting strategies.

For example, backlinks.

Backlinks are good, right? Don't most SEO experts agree they are? After all, the website with the most backlinks will eventually have the highest page rank, right? And, the website having the highest page rank, because it has the most backlinks for a specific keyword phrase, wins the battle for SERP supremacy.

So we've heard.

You may ask yourself, who are we to argue with the SEO experts? Well, we are who we are and we will argue with whom we will. Or not. If we want...

And, we don't. Want to argue, that is. But, (pay attention, because the 'but' cancels out the previous statement) 'experts' tend to favor theories which verify their previously articulated positions. Not surprising since they are only human, despite some of their attitudes to the otherwise.

Our question is, how much validity do we bestow to the commonly accepted SEO knowledge base, when any honest SEO expert must admit "Because nobody knows exactly how the search engines rank sites, a lot of what we know about search engine optimization is theory"?

As Sly Stone used to sing, or slur, depending on how juiced he was, "Sometimes you're right, sometimes you're wrong".

If we're an SEO 'do-it-yourselfer' how do we select a 'theory' which could benefit our SERP position, from a waste of time traffic tactic? In other words, how do we know if we're right, or we're wrong?

The truth is "There's no guarantees in life, love and traffic generation."

Traffic generation from organic search is like everything else in life. You get the best advice from experienced people you can. You then test the advice for your particular situation. If the advice is good, but it doesn't work for you, try something else. Keep trying different strategies, and different tactics, until you make something work.

Then keep doing it, already.
