Backlinking for Higher Rankings

Expert Author Paul Roger Barnett

To push a website higher up in the search engines the best technique to use is backlinking. Essentially this is the process of placing your link on other sites.

Whilst traffic generation methods such as article marketing, video marketing, forum posting etc are all good techniques, the most effective method is to place your site link on another site. There is a bit more to it though.

There are good sites and bad sites to place your link. Not all sites are equal in Google's eyes.

Google gives a ranking to all sites and the higher the rank the better it is seen as an authority in Google's eyes. A page rank of 3 or more is considered a good rank and this is what you should be looking for.

There are many factors that determine the page rank of a site including the age of the domain and the value of the content on it.

Look for websites that have good Google page rank. When you find these look at how you can place a link on the site.

Many people see article marketing sites as having a high page rank and feel by placing their article on there they are going to get good traffic. This is not strictly true for two reasons. Firstly the home page of these sites is likely to have the high page rank and your article is not going to be placed on the home page. More likely it is going to be placed on a page which has a page rank of zero. Secondly article sites are there for article syndication, not for getting backlinks.

There are certain companies that offer to build backlinks for you. You need to check the quality of these backlinks before going ahead with a service such as this. Some blatantly rewrite articles from other people and then place this on their own blog page with a link back to your site. My experience of this is that the re written article makes little sense and the page they create is pure junk. It may give your traffic a boost and push you higher up the search engines in the short term, but Google is fully aware of this practice and is taking steps to eliminate it. You could find your site is dropped from the index for a particular keyword or dropped altogether. Months of work disappeared down the pan because you signed up to a poor backlinking service.

Look for sites in your niche and see if you can add comments to a post.

Add a comment to a discussion and then a backlink to your site. You must add value to the discussion and not spam the site. There is little point in adding a link on dog training to a post about dating. If the administrator checks the site regularly it is likely they will remove your comment and link.

Normally you will see a box for entering your name, email address and website. You can either enter your real name or enter the keyword you are targeting as the name. By entering the keyword you are creating anchor text which Google likes.

Yahoo answers is an excellent site for answering questions related to your niche and placing a link back to your site. Do not spam it with comments that add little or no value as you will get banned. Try to answer say four questions a day and you will build up a steady flow of backlinks.

Google likes to see natural backlinking so avoid backlinking software that will create thousands of links instantly.

Backlinking will help your site move higher up in the search engines. Try to do a little each day and you will see an improvement in your rankings.
