Back-to-school tips you can use and I don't think you'll hear them anywhere else!
I know you can't tell by the temperature..but it's that time, like it or not! Actually, this week marks our 4th week back to school and I think we've gotten back in our groove in spite of beach like weather!
I know most of you are sending your children off to school in the next few weeks, so I wanted to share some back-to-school tips that you're not going to hear anywhere else. We live in different times with an entire new set of issues in the classroom.
Mindset for Back-to-School
We don't always stick to a strict schedule during the summer break but we are back on our bedtime schedule a week before school starts. This gives them a week to mentally get back on schedule before it's actually back-to-school.
Always have the talk with your child...I'm not talking about the sex talk...well, at least not here. I'm talking about the talk where you tell your child what you expect of him or her. If you don't tell them, they won't know. We must have expectations for our children in order for them to have expectations for themselves.
Never Define A Word Again!
Get a dictionary for your home. Always, always, always make your child look something up that they don't understand. You don't discuss the word with them until AFTER they have looked the word up. This teaches them to THINK! The world needs more thinkers.
Feed that Interest After School
If your child has an interest in something not being offered at school, it is up to us as parents to feed that interest as much as possible. Remember the Williams' sisters couldn't afford private tennis lessons but their Dad could get a book to teach himself which enabled him to teach his girls. If you step outside YOUR box, so will your children.
Who's the Boss @ School
Make sure your child knows that the teacher is in charge while at school. Liking the teacher is not required but RESPECTING the teacher is! I always remind them that if there is a problem, they should bring it to me because that's my job.
If my high schooler has a problem with a teacher, I try to encourage her to work it out herself and ALWAYS write everything down. Teach them early about the power of the pen. Remember, we are raising thinkers.
If your child is being bullied, notified the school officials immediately. Speak with them in person as soon as possible, email them and follow up with a letter. Remember the paper trail.
Don't jump to conclusions! Do ask questions and choose your fights wisely.
Have a productive school year! I hope you find these are back-to-school tips you can use.
