Baby Cutting Teeth - Why Is Everyone So Interested In Your Babies Teeth?

Is your baby cutting teeth yet? This is a questions which so many mothers are asked, and for many new mothers it can be hard to understand the question. New parents will often wonder why they are asked this question so often?

The expression 'baby cutting teeth' comes from the idea that the first teeth are having to cut their way through the gums. For some babies this is not problem at all, the teeth almost seem to appear, there is minimal upset and suddenly the parents notice that their baby has a new pearly white tooth.

However, for some babies it can all be a bit of a saga. No one seems to know why some children will suffer more than others. Some health professionals and even other parents wonder if a multitude of viruses are ignored because the parents have put it down to teething?

The general symptoms which babies experience during teething are as follows; mild fever, pink cheeks, difficulty eating and feeding, upset tummy and fretful sleep. Obviously most of these will be quiet mild and minimal medication for the baby is needed. (A quick dose of baby teething gel will solve most problems.) However, regular massages and an afternoon nap will normally do the mother a world of good!

So back to the question; why are other parents so interested in the state of your babies teeth? There are several theories on this and the one which most mothers opt for is that other mothers want to know if you are suffering like them. They want to know if you will be a friend to talk to, or if you will be another of the parents who say it all went swimmingly. Many parents will not want to let on that they found something difficult if they think that the listener will not understand, or may not be sympathetic.

So the next time someone asks the dreaded questions 'is baby cutting teeth?' be sympathetic, they could have been up all night. It is also worth remembering that if your baby hasn't started yet, then it is possible that you have it all ahead of you and here may be a friend when you need one.
