Avoid These Common Twitter Mistakes

Expert Author Sean Bridger

Twitter can either be a powerful marketing tool, or it can be extremely damaging to your brand - it all depends on how you use it. It's easy to make mistakes, especially if you're new to Twitter, but some of those mistakes can be extremely damaging to your business.

Twitter is community driven, meaning that the reason people use it is for interpersonal interactions, and a sense of involvement in a large community. If you don't fall in line with those ideals with your own Twitter account, you may wind up doing more harm than good for your cause. Some of the biggest mistakes people make with Twitter boil down to ignoring the way your users use Twitter.

Don't Spam

A lot of people set up a Twitter account, and then start firing off links to their website with it. This is a great way to alienate other Twitter users. To be clear, it's OK to post a link to your site here and there, but if it's all you're doing with your Twitter account, you'll be perceived as a spammer, and you'll be ignored by just about everyone on Twitter. Instead of firing off link after link, mix it up some. Post a joke, or a great quote. Talk about something that happened in your day. Answer someone else's questions. Once you've done some of those things, and then throw in a link to your site. By interacting with the community, you can be sure that your Twitter followers will click your links when you post them.

Cold Tweeting

How do you react when you get a phone call during dinner offering you a great deal on car insurance? Do you listen carefully to every word the telemarketer has to say, or do you hang up almost immediately? Pretty much everyone hangs up right away, and the response to a "cold tweet" is the same as the response to a cold call. If you @reply someone you're not following, who isn't following you out of the blue just because they mentioned something relevant to your niche, they're going to ignore you. If you do it often enough you'll start getting flagged as spam, and eventually your account will be banned from Twitter. Instead, only send your link to people you have held some sort of conversation with on Twitter. Stick to users you have @replied to before, and users that are following you.

Twitter can be a great resource if you do the right things with it. If you use it in what the community perceives as the wrong way, you can actually hurt your brand rather than helping it. Avoid these mistakes, and you'll have a successful Twitter account.
