Autoresponder Marketing - How Often Should You Mail?

Expert Author Kristine Wirth

Typically, once a new business owner gets past the first hurdle of setting up an autoresponder, they then need to focus on perhaps the biggest obstacle of all; what in the world do I send my list?

This is usually the part of autoresponder marketing that really trips folks up. After all, it isn't easy to have to come up with a new topic to write about every few days.

It's like a fantastic recipe - too much of one thing can make the whole recipe go bad; you need all of the ingredients in just the right amount to make that recipe come out just perfect.

So what is that "perfect recipe" for sending emails out to your subscribers? Obviously, it depends largely on your market of course, but overall, there is a certain flow that seems to work out well regardless of the market you're working in.

Here's how:

First, send them an email right away. This should be the very first thing that you do. Likely they signed up to your list for a reason. Either you promised them a free report or e-book, or you told them that you have a great newsletter chock-full of tips. Regardless of what that reason is, send what you promised them as soon as they confirm their email address.

Alternatively, you can also offer them a 6, 7, or 8 part email course that teaches them something about the subject your website is about. This way they'll already know to look for your email each day for the next few days. It is vitally important that this series of emails, the free e-book, free report or whatever it is that you offered to them contains the absolute best content you know how to write.

Don't promote too much (or even not at all) within the first few emails that you send. This is not the time to market to them. Leave that for a later date. You need to first establish trust with your list. They likely don't know much about you and this is a great way to build up that trustworthiness.

After you've sent around six emails chock-full of great content, you can then send out an email promoting a product. If you can offer them a bonus for buying through you with this product, so much the better.

After this email, start to send your regular newsletters around every three days or so. Again, these should be full of valuable content that the subscriber can truly use. There are plenty of marketers who send emails once a day or even multiple times a day, after a while this starts to lose it's effect on your subscribers and the number of people who begin to open your emails will drop significantly.

There have been plenty of tests performed that state that sending out an email two or three times a week is the optimal strategy. This is largely due to the fact that your subscriber will not open all of your emails but it still allows your name to get in front of them on a regular basis.

To Recap:

  • Immediately send the subscriber what you promised them when they signed up to your list as soon as they confirm their email address.
  • If this was an email course, send that email course for the number of days that you promised them you would.
  • After the last email in the course, send out a promotion. Offer a bonus with this promotion if you can.
  • Follow up again two or three days later with another piece of content full of valuable information.
  • After around seven valuable content emails, send another promotion.
  • Continue with this pattern.

This way your subscribers won't see you as someone who is just trying to make a buck off of them but rather someone who gives and gives and gives and then promotes every so often.
