You're driving down the road, minding your own business, listening to your favorite radio station, when, all of a sudden out of the woods and into the road pops a deer! It's a scenario we have all been through many times before, and with any luck you can avoid creating venison more often then not. There are some things you can do to help keep the odds on your side in this battle against mother nature.
For starters, when you are in an area that you know is frequented by deer, slow down! You may not know all of the deer hang outs by heart, but you surely know some, and in those areas you should trust your past experiences, slow down and pay attention. Look for the reflection of the eye if you can't see anything else. I have never known deer whistles to be of much use, so better slow down and drive cautiously if you think deer might be around. You can also warn passing motorists through a quick flash of your bright lights when you have just seen a deer, just try not to blind the other driver!
Also remember that whenever you see one deer, there are likely more around. Just because one deer jumped in the road 100 yards in front of your car, don't assume everything is fine now. Slow down and be more alert then ever in a situation like this. If you must hit a deer, think before you swerve. Is it better to hit the deer or loose control of your car? Sometimes you may simply have to go forward rather then try to move out of the way, because it could be the safest possible route for safety's sake.
