Art Imagery Can Enhance Perceptions Of You

Expert Author John Maxymuik

We all want to be well thought of by others. Its simply human nature. When we are viewed favorably by others, it contributes to our sense of self-worth and personal happiness. It also offers distinct advantages. We're accorded a certain standing and a degree of respect, our opinions are heard, and we have a measure of influence with those around us. So, yes, others' perceptions of us are important!

Perception Management-No

The importance of the perceptions of others regarding us may start with the perceptions of us on the part of our personal families and childhood neighbors but it can eventually reach out far beyond that. It can even extend into things like regional, national, and international politics, opinion and business. In such areas the molding of the perceptions of others about something or someone has become a science of sorts and is referred to by such terms as "perception management." And, unfortunately, such "management" has often sought its objectives at any price, even using deception and falsehood to do it. Thus "perception management" is now viewed with a measure of cynicism and distrust by many. But, what about perception enhancement? Isn't it the same thing? Not really.

Perception Enhancement-Yes

'Put your best foot forward' is an adage heard by almost all of us since childhood. With it in mind our parents trained us to brush our teeth, wash our faces and comb our hair. They extended the principle when they taught us about the importance of clean, neat, appropriate clothes, keeping our bedrooms tidy and presentable, and then right conduct and behaviour toward others with principles like 'honesty is the best policy', 'do unto others...' etc. Admittedly, the training was basically for our personal good. But it was also for the purpose of us being able to get along well with others, which included their viewing us favourably. In other words, that training was also done to help us learn and practice enhancement of others perceptions of us.

As we grew up we further learned that there was a need for balance and a sense of limits about the importance of others perceptions of us. We came to understand that 'following the crowd' regardless of where they were headed, and being primarily 'a crowd pleaser' wasn't being smart. On the other hand, we realized that being 'true to principle' and 'standing for what you believe in' were more important values. So, we came to the realization that at a certain point, these latter values had to over-ride the importance of others perceptions of us. In short, we could only go so far to affect or enhance others perceptions of us, and no further.

Putting it simply and frankly, we determined that we could not violate principles of truth, right and honesty in our efforts to influence others perceptions of us. This then, is the basic difference between "perception management" and "perception enhancement." Consequently, employing enhancement (putting your best foot forward) is o.k., use of management (by means of falsehood, etc) is not.

Perception Enhancement through Art Imagery

Granted then, there are innumerable ways to go about honestly and ethically enhancing others perceptions of us and, if we own and operate a business, their perceptions of that business as well. But, I'd like to direct your attention to just one: the use of imagery.

There are few things more often or more effectively used than imagery to mold perceptions, whether its those about individuals, organizations, companies, nations, events or issues, etc. If you wonder about the validity of that statement then just do an online search using: perception management with imagery (Google = 98,500 at this writing). Thus, a very effective category of imagery for use in perception enhancement is that of art imagery.

The art imagery we choose to display on the walls of our homes can do much more than provide color coordination with the walls, drapes and floors. If we have chosen the imagery because of personal considerations (we love it and connect with it) it will say something to visitors and guests about us personally: our sense of class and taste to start with. Additionally, it can also make a statement about our values, ethics and ideals as well.

The art imagery we choose because of personal considerations for the walls of our place of business or work can enhance others perceptions about that workplace or business too. From the art we display there our customers or clients will form an opinion about our work or the business that will help determine whether they look to establish long term relationships or maybe disappear after the initial dealings and transactions. And the perceptions enhanced wont be just theirs. The perceptions of our colleagues, suppliers and employees will also be affected. And a strong positive perception on their part can definitely impact the performance of our business.

In conclusion, art imagery of an appropriate and tasteful sort, with the right pictures, can be vital to enhancing others perceptions of us and our business. If chosen according to personal preferences and thoughtful insight art imagery can help us improve the way in which people see us, our work and our business. That, in turn, means we, our livelihood and our business are more likely to succeed.
