Are you still cutting yourself is a question that many doctors ask who are counseling cutters. Cutting is the deliberate act of harming oneself. There are many adults who are harming themselves as well as teens. The typical profile of a cutter is a female teen but this is a bit of a misconception. While it is true that girls are the largest percentage of cutters it does not often stop with teenage. There are many millions of adult cutters that secretly harm themselves. Boys cut themselves as well but the usual self-harm of boys are that of hitting themselves. Many boys will bang their heads on a wall or even pull their hair.
These are reactions to an emotional experience that is troubling them. Something is wrong and the individual is expressing a release in this act of cutting. Cutting yourself is dangerous; it is a problem that produces deep psychological wounds on the psyche. Cutting should not be ignored or allowed to work itself out. This approach can have deadly consequences to the cutter and their loved ones. Usually this act of cutting can produce a response of satisfaction in the cutter. It is an answer to the pain they are experiencing, unfortunately the temporary relief that the cutter has will cause a rebound affect that can start a cycle of cutting.
The usual response to cutting is therapy sessions and medication. The question of why a one cuts has been addresses in therapy. The good of therapy is that it usually leads to some revelation. The person may express feelings that others never knew existed, this is one aspect of therapy that is very helpful. Therapy can be very beneficial but does not necessarily cure a person. The question of why one cuts often boils down to the fact that the person needs to do this. The act has become necessary to the cutter. Something is being addressed by the cut. The cut becomes the answer to something. This is the difficulty when people ask why the cutter cuts. It is similar to asking why a drug addict takes drugs. The broad answer is that the drug feels good. A cutter may want to cut because it feels good or may not want to cut but does so because it is an answer to problem.
The technique by an international filmmaker has been helping cutters in an amazing way. The technique involves no medication or therapy at all. A person learns to stop cutting on his or her own with a technique that changes the cutting thought. It has nothing to do with will power and is helping many. The cutter solves the problem alone with no one else but himself or herself. If you are cutting yourself you must address this now.
