Are There Really Disadvantages to Viral Marketing?

Expert Author Lauren B Botney

Viral marketing ("VM") means harnessing the power of the internet to build a social network. VM has taken the whole traditional concept of referrals to the next level!

Commonly compared to an unending spider web, the strategy involves linking connections to keep the buzz high and the interest mounting. Think about today's desires for cell phones and other technology. You never knew what these new toys were not too long ago. Now you can't live without them. The concept of creating desire or building an insatiable need is the basic premise here as well. Employing internet strategies allows even a newcomer to pursue a promotional campaign relentlessly and generate results quickly.

Is there really a downside?

Most good things in life are a double edged sword and this is no exception.

- You have to know how to write. That doesn't mean you have to be a pro but you must know how to get your ideas across effectively. If this is an obstacle for you, consider other options. You could hire a ghostwriter but that costs money.

- While many of the methods used in VM are free that doesn't make it easy. The process involves a learning curve. Building the web-like connections means knowing how to build links and sub-links and how to get premiere 'play' in search engines like Google and Yahoo! This takes time and sweat. It can be simple if you put in the time to make it happen. If you build it, they will come.

- Through online automation, emails and messages can be easily produced and timed to reach your audience. Spam is an inherent risk when you do this. You could become an unwitting accomplice and victim in the process. Delivery of quality content is the best protection against spam. Following the rules posted by your various service providers is good safety insurance as well.

- Contacts need to be 'qualified.' Realize that the system still requires human involvement. Not all the connections will be worth your time. With experience, you will learn to target your audience to minimize this risk.

The upside is that VM is powerfully effective! That is a huge 'plus' factor. You don't need to leave home to make it work for you. In many cases VM is free with the addition of your personal efforts and time. The learning curve can be climbed with perseverance and partnering with a coach who can show you the ropes. Just find the right coach and you're more than halfway there!

As with most choices in life, you must weigh the pluses and minuses. There may be some disadvantages to viral marketing but for those who can communicate these are far outweighed by many advantages!
