Are Forums a Good Place to Market My Home Based Business?

Expert Author Dan T Himes

Forums or message boards are a plenty online. Just type in the phrase "home based business forum" and you're sure to come up with more than a few. Now it would make good sense that if there are so many forums out there with so many people interested in working from home that they would be a great place to market your home based business but are they really? Or are they just a waste of time?

Over the years I have gone back and forth on the issue. Sure forums are fun and I have certainly participated in many of them over the years however I have had very minimal success with promoting my business on there. That is because home based business, online marketing and MLM forums are all filled with people who are already involved in some type of business already. Very rarely does someone who is looking to join a home based business join a home based business forum so really all you're doing is talking to a bunch of people who are already spoken for as far as a company goes.

That is not to say that forums are useless because I have gained some good information from a few of them. However, as far as marketing goes I believe that your time could be better spent. If however, you decide that you really want to give it a try here are a few tips to help you market better on a forum or a message board.

1. Don't spam - It can get you banned, it's not going to get you any sign ups, it's just plain annoying... don't do it!

2. Have an interesting signature - The best way to market on a forum is with your signature (of course that's only if the forum lets you have one, some don't) so make sure you have a good one that will catch people's attention.

3. Be helpful - If someone asks a question and you know the answer be helpful! It shouldn't all be about promoting your website it should be about having meaningful conversations and helping out fellow business owners. When you're helpful people will like you and this is going to do nothing but help your business grow.

4. Don't participate in drama - Don't argue with people on an internet forum. it's just lame and it won't gain you any friends or respect. It can be easy to fall into the silly forum fights and the meaningless drama but don't. You're not there to bicker over who has the better compensation plan. You are there to marketing your business, perhaps learn some helpful tips and get out!
