Are Children Spending Too Much Time In Front Of The Screen?

It's now estimated that children spend as much as 6 hours in front of the screen each day. This isn't just the TV screen, but the computer screen as well. Obviously, if the child is watching something educational, this isn't too much of a problem, but how often is this likely to be the case?

The government seems to spend a large amount of both time and money advising parents on the best way in which to provide their children with healthy diets, but not much seems to be said about the amount of time children spend with their eyes glued to the screen. I remember growing up as a child, which was only 20 years ago, and there being kids playing outside daily. And this didn't just apply to my street. You were guaranteed to see children either playing outside on the street, or playing in parks after school, and on the weekends. Nowadays, this is a very rare occurrence. I'll go to the park on a nice warm day, and whereas in my day it would be packed with kids playing ball games, running around trying to catch each other, or playing on the swings etc, nowadays you'll be lucky to see even just a handful of children. I think this is a grave shame, and something which will severely negatively impact society once these children become adults, and when they themselves have children.

How much are these children missing out on the life experiences by staying glued to the screen by themselves. Not having fun outdoors, experiencing life, socialising, learning from their mistakes. It's all very well parents saying they want their child to stay inside as it's too dangerous outside, or they like to keep an eye on them. This is fine if the family truly live in a rough neighbourhood, but how many of us can truly say that? I truly feel children in this day and age, whilst having many advantages due to technology over previous generations, are also suffering as a consequence of these technologies. And unfortunately, the results of this may not be known until way into the future, when it could possible be too late.
