Anomaly Vineyards was started as a small family project in the small town of St. Helena California (part of Napa County) in 1997 and after much consternation and fighting with the city, the winery was permitted and began producing wine for sale in their small stone building with a 2,000 square foot cave in the year 2000.
The results, as they have been with many small vintners in the area, have been dramatic to say the least. Originally producing only 300 cases of wine, the ultra premium hand groomed Cabernet Sauvignon has received a score of over 91 points every year since 2005 from major wine critics such as Robert Parker. Anomaly now produces a bit more of their Cabernet Sauvignong, but with production set at just under 900 cases, or just over 10,000 bottles it is still an incredibly difficult wine to find.
The winery now grows a small amount of Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc in order to craft the two main essential blending agents for ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
Anomaly has been owned and operated since its inception by Steve and Linda Goldfarb whom decided to leave the two hour commute and life as an attorney to turn to wine. As is often the story in Napa, it takes a large fortune to make a small one in wine and that seems to be the case here, although it is hard to argue with the type of life and lifestyle that making wine can create both for the company founders, but for their descendants as well.
Lastly, as is the current state of affairs in Napa Valley, the family now makes an ultra premium olive oil product as well. As any Italian would tell you, few things go together better than olive oil (or olive trees) and wine (or vines for that matter).
The next time you find yourself looking for an exclusive, hard to find, Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Anomaly is a nice place to start.
