An Unexpected Success Secret

Expert Author Ann Vertel

Last week I was in sheer agony. It was Monday and time for me to write another article. Writing and I have this barely tolerable love-hate relationship. Sometimes it feels like a gut-wrenching chore; other times it feels like a song. I bargain with myself, procrastinate, and often dread it.

And yet, I write.

It's not the communicating - that part I adore. It's the actual process of writing. (Those who know me can attest to the fact that I would much rather talk than write!)

But writing provides the means for me to grow as a professional - to realize my overall vision. It forces me to clarify my ideas on paper. But I also write because it is simply part of what I do. For me, it is the "work" part of my business. Without it, I would gain very few new customers or clients. So I write in order to keep building my business. It is not easy, but it is simple.

I can spend hours agonizing over the prospect of writing and so the only way for me to write is to just begin. There is great power in beginning. Often the rest will flow once I get through those first few awkward moments. If I just open a new file on the computer and start writing I always have a finished article at the end, and oh my gosh does that ever feel sweet.

It took me a long time to realize this and it still takes everything I have just to open the new file. But it is in those moments, when I push through the mental muck, where the winning happens. Over and over again.

Like all businesses, I know there is a part of yours that you don't like to do. Each time you choose what you want most over what you want now you are exercising discipline. It is in that discipline, of putting one foot in front of the other, of just "doing the next thing" and pushing through the stuff that makes you want to gag, where you will discover an unexpected dirty little secret...

Discipline breeds self-confidence.

Where are you not honoring the discipline that creates your success? Is it in your work-out routine, your sleep, or your six most important daily things? When you are not disciplined you will always feel "less than." And when you choose discipline, you will win big, every single time.

So seriously, quit all the whining and excuse making and justifying and go do what you know needs to be done. Just get over it and go be a millionaire!
