An SEO Experiment - Fidderfardle
Fidderfardle, what on earth is a Fidderfardle?
A Fidderfadle is a lot smaller than a Fermisquaddle, and looks absolutely nothing like a Merdlebug.
Yes - I am talking complete & utter nonsense, but for a very good reason - as an experiment just to show how fast & easy it is to get top positions for words with little or no competition. Yes it's also totally pointless, as nobody at all is ever going to search for a fidderfardle, or a fermisquaddle, or a merdlebug (well, I wouldn't have thought so anyway) - BUT what this shows you, is the importance of good keyword research.
If you could find keywords that have very little competition but DO have some traffic - this is powerful!
If you have a new website, with little link popularity, it would be very difficult getting top ranking for competitive keywords - but looking for great keywords with very few competitors, is a very clever way of getting traffic to a website quickly, with targeted & high conversion traffic, while you work on off page SEO to enable the site to rank highly for more competitive phrases.
This is an example of "shooting the planes on the ground."
During the second world war, a fighter pilot won medals for destroying record numbers of enemy aircraft - I can't remember the figures but this guy destroyed more enemy planes than any other fighter pilot. When being interviewed, he was asked how he was able to notch up so many enemy hits - and he replied "They were all on the ground!"
So not only had this pilot destroyed record numbers of enemy aircraft, he did it with minimum effort, (not to mention minimum loss of life, he doesn't have to lose sleep about that because all the planes he destroyed were just parked up!) by being very clever he was able to get more results than others get, with less effort than others give.
Starting SEO on a new website and starting out straight away trying to rank high for competitive keywords, is like a brand new fighter pilot in world war II getting in a plain & chasing after the most experienced enemies looking for a dogfight - that's very rarely going to work out well for the newcomer, where as focusing first on doing very good keyword research to find phrases which have traffic but very little competition, is like shooting the planes on the ground.
Anyway getting back to the Fidderfardle, once again it's a completely made up animal, you'll never see one - although you never know, with weird breeds of dog being created, maybe someone could cross a duck with basset hound, and call that a Fidderfardle, if they do I'll start selling fidderfardle accessories until the big pet stores cotton on to my little niche ;-)
