An Art Form For the Body - Myofascial Release (MFR)

Expert Author Vanessa Hodge

Myofascial Release (MFR) has existed in various forms for many years. Just recently, however it has gained influence due to scientific research and the use of electron microscopes.

Myofascial Release is an ideal treatment for physical and emotional pain or discomfort. The entire human body acts as one; it is no longer thought to be separate at the mind body connection level. Myofascial Release promotes the idea that the mind and body work together to maintain good health.

The body has the ability to remember postural positions, actions and emotions without the brain reminding it to do so. Throughout the body's fascial system flow microscopic cells containing energy which have the ability to retain memory. Our sub conscious mind and thus our body remembers how to walk, lift a cup and drive a car, we do not have to relearn these skills each time we do it. So our unconscious mind is not restricted to the brain but flows freely through our body within the fascial system.

If our body can remember positive actions and emotions then it must be true that we can also remember negative ones. Memories, both physical and emotional, can be triggered by a state of mind, context and by the position of our body.

Fascia which is also known as the fibrous bands or connective tissue, is a 3 dimensional continuous web of microscopic hollow tubes that runs from the top of the head to the tip of the toes, providing instant and continuous communication between each and every cell in the body.

When the network of fascia is attacked or traumatised it pulls the body out of alignment, changing the shape and length of the supporting muscles, ligaments and tendons and putting significant pressure on nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels.

Myofascial Release creates the cause of the pain at its deepest level by using a 'whole body system' rather than looking at an isolated site of original injury.

The treatment or therapy consists of a therapist putting their hands on the body and then feeling and gently, slowly stretching, the fascia will release in its own good time and the process cannot be speeded up. The releasing of the fascia is a natural process that occurs when sustained gentle pressure is applied for a minimum of 90-120 seconds, under gentle pressure the fascia will return to its natural resting length restoring health and movement. These results are both functional and measurable.

Sometimes memories can become locked into the fascial system and manifest themselves in physical pain. With the help of MFR the physical and emotional elements of any injury, literal or symbolic, can be addressed in a safe and gentle way. MFR also treats the injury at source allowing the patient to heal at the deepest level.

Myofascial Release works very well with our specialised addition of NLP during the treatment as this further works on both the mind and body simultaneously, turning standard MFR into an art form for the body.

Myofascial Release Therapy is a specialised physical therapy that affects and releases the restrictions within the fascial network, the addition of NLP allows for the release of those restrictions in the subconscious.

Our Myofascial Release therapist's not only take in to consideration what they see in the patient's postural assessment but work directly with what they feel from palpating and what they sense from treating both the body and the mind.

Even though the patient may not feel much happening the experienced therapist can actually feel the fascial restrictions and subsequently feels the release of those restrictions during the session. The difference it can make to how you feel after the session is over and you stand up and move around more freely is quite phenomenal. Recently a client said, after being treated that, "I haven't felt this good in ages".
