One way to make America less dependent on imported oil from the middle east is to invest in Sugar Cane, Farmers have been planting Sugar Cane in Louisiana, Hawaii and Florida for many years, Sugar Cane have been used in the past just to sweeten other products, however it can also be used to make Ethanol.

Beet and Corn are now more widely used as sweeteners, Corn and Beet production have gone up recently, while Sugar Cane production have gone down dramatically, one of the many reasons for this is the cost to produce sugar from cane, another is the amount of states that can produce Sugar Cane about 4, compared to about 40 that can produce Beet and Corn sugar, maybe Sugar Cane can now be used exclusively to produce Ethanol, the technology is available, the land and labour is available, and if more land and labour is needed that is also available in Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands.

America has also lost most of the land that was traditionally used for sugar cane production to other industries, in Hawaii more that 50 percent of former Sugar Cane land is now being used to plant Coffee and macadamia nuts, U S Sugar in florida recently lost about 187,000 acres of land that was bought by the state of Florida, this land will now be part of the everglades wetlands, these wetlands are the largest subtropical wilderness in the united states, and home to many rare and endangered species.

Sugar Cane grows best in hot climates, South America and the Caribbean are great examples of ideal places to grow Sugar Cane.
