The cells in the human body contain a natural fatty acid which is known as alpha lipoic acid, which can be shortened as simply ALA. Additionally, it is considered to be an enzyme cofactor. This material is used by the body for some of its functions, one of which is energy production by aerobic metabolism. It is also known by names such as thioctic acid, or simply lipoic acid.
ALA is considered as a treatment for peripheral neuropathy, a condition of damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system. This issue can appear as a result from different conditions, including: shingles, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, inflammatory diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and many others. ALA is one potential treatment method, but should not be used in place of other options recommended by a professional (if not contraindicated or leading to a possible interaction, it may be used together with that treatment).
Additional claimed uses for alpha lipoic acid also exist, including treatments and other medical benefits. Alzheimer's disease, as well as other conditions related to age, can sometimes be treated using it. Cataracts and glaucoma are two eye-related issues that at times receive treatment with ALA. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is another such condition.
Also consider side effects, and other precautions such as contraindications and interactions, prior to taking alpha lipoic acid. Rash on the skin is one of the more common side effects. Amongst contraindications, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use ALA as its safety in such cases is unknown. For interactions, individuals using insulin or drugs that lower the blood sugar should not take the supplement.
