If you enjoy history, outdoor activities, and vacations in small towns with big personalities, then an Alpena escape is ideal for you.

Alpena is a picturesque town in Michigan’s lower peninsula. It sits above Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay in an area called “Sunrise Shoreline.” Alpena is a charming area, filled with houses which have been beautifully maintained from the beginning of the twentieth century. There is a downtown shopping area, and a museum which has a one-room schoolhouse from the 19th century as well as a planetarium. There are many dining options. Alpena also has a lighthouse which can be seen at City Harbor.

Although many tourists travel to Alpena during the summer months, ice fishing during the winter is also quite popular. This area of Michigan has four seasons, with very cold winters. In addition to ice-fishing, many visitors to Alpena enjoy skiing, ice-skating, sledding and snowmobiling. During the summer months, guests can fish, bike, go hiking or boating. Alpena has a golf course as well, and there are two additional golf courses located within thirty miles.

Alpena has several chain hotels and motels available. The Holiday Inn of Alpena has 148 rooms which average around $90 and up. Reservations can be made by calling (989) 356-2151. The Best Western Inn of Alpena has 40 guest rooms which start at $55 a night. Guests can call (989) 356-9087 for reservations. In addition to the hotels available, there are many cabins, lodges and lake homes available to rent. Those interested can search online where individual listings for rentals are posted. Camping is also an option in Alpena.

If you want to stay in a bed and breakfast while on your Alpena vacation getaway, the Northern Shore Lodge has thirteen bedrooms available for guests. This three story lodge has 13 bedrooms, two fully-equipped kitchens available for guests, and a deck which can be used for grilling and eating outdoors. There is a lakefront beach onsite with three docks. Kayaks, a paddle boat and a pontoon boat are available. There is a hot tub, entertainment area, and even toys for the kids to play with. Rates range from $50 to $90 a night, depending on the season. For more information, call 248-349-2718.

An Alpena vacation getaway can offer you plenty of activities in a laid-back setting. It is ideal for families wanting to spend quality time together but who might be on a tighter budget. Alpena is rich in history and the people are kind. You will want to make Alpena a regular vacation destination.
