All of us have probably experienced some form of mold at one time or another. Maybe it was the green stuff hidden in the refrigerator by some leftover forgotten cheese or maybe it was the toxic black fungus growing in plain sight on the bathroom wall. Any way you look at it, molds are nasty stuff and the only way to rid your home of them is through prevention.
The easiest way to prevent green molds is by clearing out your refrigerator at least once a week. Also, be on the lookout for any split liquids or sweating fruit in the fridge. Moisture is the perfect breeding ground for molds.
You should also make it a habit of scraping food and rinsing dishes before you throw them in the sink unless you don't mind growing a science experiment of the green stuff. And if you do a lot of cooking or use a dishwasher, you should use your exhaust fan if you have one. If you don't, you can open windows to let out some of the moisture.
Your kitchen isn't the only room in the house where molds can grow. Anywhere there is moisture; you'll more than likely discover that there's some sort of fungi lurking around. Basements are a notorious breeding ground for molds. If you have a basement, you should invest in a dehumidifier.
You should also use a dehumidifier if you have a shower in your home. Dehumidifiers can be inexpensive and cost as low as $30. Or if you don't want to invest in a dehumidifier at the moment, you can open a window when you shower or run a bathroom fan if you have one.
If you use an air conditioner, make sure that your drip pans are clean and that the drain lines are free from debris. If your air conditioner gives off a lot of condensation, you may want to consider using ceiling fans instead, unless you don't mind wiping the air conditioner down a few times a day.
Speaking of condensation, you should consider checking your windows, drywall and plumbing where it can easily accumulate. If you find that your home has a lot of condensation, it probably means that you have extremely high humidity in your home and you should really consider investing in a dehumidifier or two.
The above may seem like a lot of work, but mold prevention is absolutely necessary when it comes to your safety as well as your family's safety. Be smart and do what's necessary for the sake of you and your family's health.
