Airsoft Games - A Glimpse in History of AEG

Expert Author Suzie Sanchez

A lot of hype has been accorded to airsoft games, both negative and positive. Some people say that it is a very dangerous sport which can cause serious injuries to the participant, while others claim that it is a perfectly safe and invigorating sport. Airsoft weapons consist primarily of gun replicas having enough power to propel plastic pellets on an average of seven hundred feet per second. Airsoft games are usually held in isolated areas where there are no bystanders except for the participants and their companions themselves.

Although there has been a lot of confusion where airsoft games really started, it is generally believed to have originated from the United States in the late 70s but because of the lack of better firearms, it became just a fad and lasted only for a short while. It found its way during the 1980s in Japan where the laws there prohibit citizens, apart from authorized personnel like the military and police, from owning guns. Interest in firearms of some of the Japanese citizens, however, grew to a point where manufacturers started to develop spring powered replicas of real firearms.

At first, these gun replicas were used only for recreational target practice in specially designated areas. However, hobbyists soon took to playing military simulation games using these spring powered gun replicas. As the popularity of the sport rose, manufacturers started to develop gas and battery operated airsoft guns which eventually replaced the spring powered replicas.

Today, Automatic Electric Guns, or AEG, are the weapons of choice by airsoft hobbyists. It is an exact scale replica of real guns, handles and is operated quite much like an authentic firearm, and weighs almost like the real thing. In fact, most of tactical accessories for real guns, like carrying bags, scopes and slings, can be used in combination with the AEG. The only difference perhaps is that AEG fires biodegradable plastic projectiles with just enough force to inform the participants that they have been hit.

During the early 1990s, airsoft games found its way back into North America where it was warmly welcomed by gun enthusiasts who were very much excited with the prospect of using a 1:1 scale AEG replica of the real thing. AEG were even adopted by military and police authorities for close quarter combat training because of their similarity to real firearms when it comes down to appearance, handling, weight, and operation.

Airsoft games are currently being enjoyed by professionals and enthusiasts who find the vigorous activity extremely fun and satisfying. With the current high popularity of airsoft games, it will definitely be here for a long time.
