Packing for your flight.
Most airlines allow each passenger to check two pieces of luggage and one carry on. I suggest that you pack at least one change of clothing and some basic toiletries in the unfortunate event the airline send your luggage to the wrong destination. I also recommend that you securely label each piece luggage with your name, address, and phone number. Another good idea for your valuables you plan on taking would be to either send them ahead via a parcel service. This way you can insure these items and they can be replaced. If you don't like that I suggest wearing a belly bag with the pouch locked and secured in front of you.
Preparing for your flight and arriving at the airport.
My biggest suggestion here is to have a friend drive you to the airport and pick you up when you return. This will help you avoid extra costs such as cab fares, long or short term parking fees, and the fear of leaving your vehicle alone for certain time period. I also think it is a very good idea to leave extra early to avoid traffic issues and any delays you may encounter while checking your bags and getting through security. I believe having your car rental at your destination planned ahead of time is a great idea, unless of course you have arranged for friends, or family to meet you there. If you are traveling outside the country having your passport ready a few days in advance is also a great idea. The biggest tip I can offer when you're at the airport is to not accept anything from a stranger and to go straight to your gate.
During and after the flight.
During most flights it is best to stay in your seat at all times, unless of course you need to use the restroom. I would also suggest not leaving anything like your cell phone wallet or camera laying in the seat next to you or placing them on the floor. Pickpockets and thieves love to prey on people who don't pay attention to their belongings. If you're traveling alone I would also suggest bring along a book or your mp3 player or IPod, long flights or delays alone can be boring. After your flight the best thing to do right away or after meeting somebody is to go straight to baggage claim. This will save you from having to chase your bags all over the place. After that it's off to the car rental desk or to meet your ride. Enjoy your trip and always be safe.
