So, you have signed up for a great affiliate program, you truly believe in them and you are happy to promote their products. You have probably already developed your strategy for promotion of their products, ideas you could use, selected their banners, graphics and other useful materials for marketing. Seems that you have everything under your control and everything should work great.
But, although you have figured everything out, you may still have some problems in developing marketing methods and strategies, or you may have problems with lack of sales. In other words, you might find yourself wondering what is wrong. Below you can find some of the most common problems and issues that affect sales, commissions and leads.
Cookies
The most common way for tracking affiliate leads and sales is through the use of cookies, which are small files that are automatically stored on visitor's PC. Since most of the visitors don't make a purchase on the first visit, cookies allow affiliates to be credited for sale if visitors they've sent to the merchants website make a purchase later on another visit. That's why cookies are good and important to affiliates.
The duration of cookies can vary and it depends on the merchant settings. Some of them will last as short as a single session, while others can last for several years. But, visitors can flush their browsing history and clear their cookies, or they can use cookie blocking software, or merchant's program may not work correctly. All that can cause problems for affiliates and can be reasons for lack of sales. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about that.
Multiple payment methods
There is a huge number of merchants who support various and multiple methods of payment. You may also join an affiliate program through a third party network that processes payments for products on behalf of merchants. In that case especially multiple payment methods are not uncommon. While multiple methods of payment for products are great for customers, they could be bad for affiliates.
That is why it would be wise for you to check the merchant site carefully before you begin to promote any of their products. Choose only affiliate programs that suits your needs, and if you have any doubts, contact the merchant and ask them everything what you would like to know before you choose that particular affiliate program.
Monitoring your programs
Affiliate programs and scripts are just pieces of programming codes. They can stop working at some point in time, or they can work in the wrong way. That is why even the most honest merchants can experience problems with them, get wrong data, miss some sales and commissions and so on. Therefore, it is important to take some time occasionally and check their cookies and merchant websites for any changes or problems that may affect your commissions and payments. If you notice changes and problems that you find important, contact the merchant and ask for explanation.
