Affiliate Marketing - 3 Things You Should Never Do

Expert Author Bruce Stewart

What a cool product! It answers all of YOUR questions, it's got a great sales page and the price is reasonable. Now all you have to do is buy a domain name and set up your affiliate marketing site and you're in business, right?

WRONG! Here are 3 things you should never do if you want to be successful at affiliate marketing.

Skip the research -

That might be the coolest looking blue widget on the planet and it may be exactly what YOU'VE been looking for. But you're not the one you're trying to sell to. Is anyone else interested in it? Does anyone else want to buy one? And how many other people are selling that cool, blue widget? What are your competitors? What do their sites look like? How are THEY marketing the product? Will you be able to beat your competition?

Wing it -

You'll need a marketing plan. Which means you'll need to know the features and benefits of that cool, blue widget and you'll need to know who the target audience is. How do you plan to market this product - with a blog or a website? What keywords are you going to use to attract the right traffic? How are you going to market to them?

How will you promote your site?

If you use PPC advertising, how much traffic will you need to generate to get enough conversions to cover your advertising costs and still make a profit? As Yul Brenner once said, "Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!" Buying a domain name as soon as you see a product that attracts YOUR attention just means you're going to have a whole lot of domain names.

You want SALES!

Give up too soon - Very few businesses - online or off - generate sales and profit the first day they're up and running. Affiliate marketing isn't difficult at all - but it does take concentrated effort. You need to make sure you're using the right keywords so the search engines can find you. And for awhile, the search engines are going to move your site all over the index until they decide just how valuable you are. No matter what niche you're in there are bound to be some competing sites.

Keep putting that valuable information out there and keep promoting your site and give the search engines - and the searchers - time to find you before you give up. Pick a marketing method, develop your plan, and stick with it!
