Advertising Your Business

Expert Author Chris Slavik

No matter what business you have, whether it is an online business or a brick and mortar business, you will not last long without some type of advertising. So how does a business decide where their dollars go for advertising?

For businesses to make a decision on how much to spend and where to spend it, they must have a good understanding of what is available from advertising and what is the expected outcome would be. Businesses must know which markets the different types of advertising can reach and the demographics and the buying habits of their customers.

There are many types of offline media that a business can take advantage of. The success or failure of using any of these will depend on your product and the demographics you are in. The main types of advertising include, TV, radio, newspaper and magazines. Beyond these four main types, we find word of mouth, branding, billboards, telemarketing, press release and trade shows.

Cost is usually the main factor of what type of media and business selects. The four main types of advertising tend to more costly, but they do offer more affordable packages, (advertise during non-primetime zones), so businesses should not shy away from them all together. They tend to reach out to the most people in the shortest amount of time.

Some of the other non-traditional media such as press releases and trade shows can be more events driven and can bring in new customers that other media styles would not have touched. These can also be expensive, but dollars are usually reserved for these types of shows.

Direct sales have always existed in most businesses. Direct sales and telemarketing and very simple to use, but can become expensive if it is not controlled. Telemarketing can very successful, but can also lead to damaging a businesses' reputation.

Using Billboards and branding together can also be very powerful. Branding is a process that communicates to your customers that your business is the supplier of certain products or services. We see these every day. They are usually tag lines that describe a message that the business is trying to communicate, like BMW's "Exploration of Beauty".

Like investments, business should not spend all of their advertising dollars into one advertising media. By selecting a few media that allow you to reach out to a variety of customers can certainly increase your success. Keeping track of which media you use and compare the dollars spent to the dollars made will help in deciding whether your advertising dollars are working for you.
