Even an adult dog still needs constant attention to keep it in good shape. Physical and mental stimulation is required to keep its motor skills sharp and of course social interaction will also help further its development. Doing all that regularly will definitely keep your dog happier and may even add several precious years to its life. Remember that your dog is like a friend that needs constant attention to keep your connection alive and well.

As you know, your dog acquires certain skills and commands, some are taught while others are learned innately. Regardless, each skill that is mastered further the maturation of your dog and there comes a point where in your dog becomes more of a companion and friend rather than just another animal lying around the house. There is a connection made and this makes the relationship all the more enjoyable.

This is because you are giving your dog the knowledge and capacity to be able to experience and learn from you. The more you interact and allow your dog to socialize with others, the more it becomes attuned to humans and most especially its master. This makes your dog more responsive and obedient to your commands. Consequently, you will be able to take your dog to even more places so basically, it is a cycle of learning, trusting and rewarding.

One tip that you can put to use is to teach your dog a new trick every week. This will keep it on its toes and not make it lazy. At the same time, it will keep its mind stimulated and working to keep it from decaying and losing its sharpness.

This is especially applicable to dogs that are more intelligent than average. This means that their mentally stimulating activities have to be of a certain degree and level that will not dull their senses. In other words, their needs are greater to keep their enhanced skills at a high working level. Otherwise, these dogs may become bored and at times become uncontrollable.

Border Collies, Great Danes, Australian Cattle Dogs, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Old English Sheepdogs are examples of working breeds and are examples of highly intelligent dogs that require more work to make them happy. Of course with all the work you have to put out, the rewards are also equally satisfying.

As a rule of thumb, always remember that boredom can be a major factor in contributing to the destructive nature of your dog. Your pet needs something to keep itself busy and keep its skills intact. Thus, constant and regular work and attention will have to be given to keep your adult dog obedient.
