Adult ADHD Impulsivity

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that up to 4.1 percent of American adults are affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a mental illness characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. ADHD usually starts in childhood and lasts through adulthood.

ADHD impulsivity has two sub-divisions; behavioral impulsivity, and cognitive impulsivity.

Let's take behavioral impulsivity first. In this type no matter how many times it instructed to think before acting the person on the verge of the incident will act impulsively. The problem here is that the learning threshold for people with ADHD behavioral impulsivity is very high. They need excitation and more motivation to learn than normal.

Adults suffering from behavioral impulsivity show the following symptoms.

Act without thinking first. They cannot wait their turn in a queue. They Say whatever that is on their mind. At times they start talking when they are supposed to be quiet no matter how many times it is being told to them. At times they exhibit aggressive behaviors; often get in to fights. They speak louder and in excitable tones than usual. During conversations they have hysterical episodes; varying degrees of emotional outbursts. They often have poor social skills; they say things they are not supposed to, and end up offending people around them.

Most adults suffering from behavioral impulsivity do not learn the social cues and thus act awkward in social gatherings.

Now let's take cognitive impulsivity. Cognitive impulsivity means "a lot of guessing". Guessing is the problem solving method of choice for the adults suffering from ADHD impulsivity. Cognitively impulsive ADHD adults will use guessing to get through most of the problems. On an oral MCQ they will guess all the answers very quickly, without going in to detail of the options available. Due to this cognitively impulsive ADHD Adults have very limited problem solving strategies. This becomes a problem as they underperform and cannot use their full potential. They don't stop and look at the problem at hand. They usually just guess and let trial and error take its course.

It is also the result of a feeling of burden of the task at hand that the ADHD adults make impulsive judgments and decisions about work. It is the feeling that they should shake off the burden as quickly as possible. Being fast is not a problem here. In fact "being fast and accurate is good." It's fast and being inaccurate that is a problem.
