Adding Fuel to Success Through Gardening?

Expert Author Ernest Morse

I was planning to do some much needed yard work after a very long and cold winter. The grass between neighboring fences were too tall. Every weed known to man had taken up to my fertile yard's soil. Anyone driving by would have thought the place was vacant had it not been for the cars in the driveway. Yep, this Sunday will be my day to get this yard back in shape.

I labored for hours pulling all the small weeds that were here and there, everywhere. It felt good. Especially being out of the house on a nice sunny day after being cooped up all winter long. I had plenty of energy and desire to get the job done. After about 5 hours of mowing, pulling weeds, and re-seeding, I started to get tired. I was only through half the yard! I looked out amongst the back yard at all the work that still laid ahead. My spirit and drive were crushed. Just look at how much work is left. It is going to take me the rest of the day to finish this!

Then, I looked back at the work I had already done. WOW. It sure did look nice. Everything was clean cut without any sign of weeds trying to poke their ugly heads. The bushes were trimmed, the walkways were swept, the grass was cut to a clean length. In that moment I had a second wind. When I turned to look at the backyard I no longer saw uncut grass with weeds taller than a small child. I saw the work I had done so far as if that same quality of work was done in the backyard. "That's it" I said. And I immediately went to working the back yard. I had about 8 hours in the whole yard before it was sparkling with cleanliness. I stepped back and admired my work with a cold glass of ice water in hand and thought "I am glad I stuck with it".

It was upon later reflection of the day that I realized a very valuable (and very profitable) lesson that I had just lived. That lesson: Never Give Up! When you look at the long field of work ahead, just keep moving forward. When you have a hard time with where you are at, look at where you have been. When you see the massive pile of work laid in front of you, just see with an eye that sees it done. When you keep your goal in the forefront o f your mind, the work at hand becomes minimal. You receive a new energy when you see your goal or objective as being completed. If I were to quit early, I can quite honestly say that I don't know if that work would have been completed before summer.

Never give up. Never take your eye off your goal.
